Suunto Core Ultimate Black and new Suunto Core Crush colors spice up your adventures The renowned Suunto Core Classic series gains a new member with Suunto Core Ultimate Black. Its black steel top ring breathes durability while the streamlined design brings out the key functionalities. Fluorescent bezel graphics illuminate in the dark, making the watch even more versatile in tough conditions. The contemporary colored straps are a statement of your style and blend well both with colorful outdoor apparel and as well as more subtle every day wear. Users can choose between the negative display of the Graphite Crush and the positive display of the Blue Crush. The award-winning Suunto Core packs all the essential features you need for the great outdoors. Keep an eye on the weather with its barometer, see how much you have left to the summit with the altimeter, or use the compass to quickly orientate yourself in the backcountry. Military inspired variants of Suunto Core and Suunto Traverse Alpha

Military inspired variants of Suunto Core and Suunto Traverse Alpha

Special edition for selected markets and dealers Suunto designed two military-inspired color variants of two popular outdoor watches: the Suunto Traverse Alpha, tested to military standards and specialized for hunting and fishing, and the iconic Suunto Core. Striking color combinations Strong, precise, reliable – the combination of deep black with imperial red detailing speaks the language of the military, as well as Suunto’s own heritage in crafting precision instruments used by soldiers around the world. “These military-inspired oudoor watches combine strong materials and Suunto design philosophy. Black and red are also the colors of Suunto, a brand identity that is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year,” says Tuomas Reivo, industrial designer at Suunto. The new watches come with the extremely durable, water repellent black military-style textile strap. Suunto Traverse Alpha - Tested to military standards Tested to the military standard MIL-STD- 810G, Suunto Traverse Alpha offers a trusted set of serious outdoor features and tools specifically developed for fishing, hunting and hiking. With features like automatic shot detection, moon phase calendar and POI types to mark trails and important locations such as animal tracks, Suunto Traverse Alpha was warmly welcomed by fishermen and hunters when launched in spring 2016. Navigating in all terrains is made possible with the integrated GPS/GLONASS route navigation with breadcrumb trail, electronic compass and FusedAlti™ that help you stay on track in unknown territory. Battery life of up to 100 hours with GPS makes the Traverse Alpha suitable for multiday treks. If your adventure continues into the night, the customizable red backlight does not interfere with night vision gear. With the stainless steel bezel and scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass, these watches are built for action. Suunto Core – Iconic award winner Suunto Core, an iconic outdoor watch with nearly a decade of use in the field, packs the essential ABC features – altimeter, barometer, and compass - into a robust, yet stylish construction. The watch warns you of rapid weather changes and helps guide you with a digital compass to make your journey safe and successful. You can follow your progress to the summit with the altimeter and plan your day by checking sunrise and sunset times for over 400 locations worldwide. Suunto unveils exclusive Suunto Essential Collection of watches

Suunto unveils exclusive Suunto Essential Collection of watches

Suunto today unveils the Suunto Essential Collection, inspired by the heritage of adventure. Since Suunto was founded over 75 years ago, the Finnish watchmaker has been at the forefront of many pioneering innovations enabling adventure; from compasses to dive computers and sports watches. Trusted by explorers, Suunto is as equally at home on the top of Mt Everest as in the depths of the ocean. The collection embodies the Suunto spirit – minimalist design, premium materials, attention to detail and zero compromise when it comes to precision and reliability. The award winning Suunto designer Timo Yliluoma drew inspiration for the Suunto Essential collection from the company’s long history of making outdoor instruments: “I aimed to match the pure form of the original Suunto March Compass with a simple, minimalistic design and construction for Suunto Essential. We also elevated the whole design through our choice of materials: high-grade stainless steel with premium coatings, sapphire crystal and premium vegetable-tanned leathers. It gives me great pride to say that Suunto Essential is both designed and made in Finland.” Finland is home to wild landscapes and a great design tradition, a natural birthplace for the Suunto Essential Collection which blends the rough with the smooth, the rugged wilderness with man-made perfection. The watches' clean lines ensure they can be worn on every occasion. Equal in functionality to the popular Suunto Core outdoor watch, barometric altimeter, barometer and compass modes are standard. There are six editions: the Copper, Gold, Carbon and Steel have a brushed finish and come with leather straps. The Stone and Slate variants have a matt finish and unique, durable textile strap. Every watch comes with an exclusive watch roll and is individually signed off at the Finnish factory to guarantee the highest quality every time. The Suunto Essential Collection is available in Asia from January 15th, globally from March 12th onwards.  For more information, go to Suunto.com/EssentialCollection.

New Suunto Traverse Sapphire Black continues Suunto design heritage

New Suunto Traverse Sapphire Black continues Suunto design heritage

The Suunto Traverse collection grows today with a new Sapphire Black watch. The newest addition to the Suunto Traverse family takes durability a step further with its sapphire crystal glass. On the inside, the Sapphire Black contains the trusted set of outdoor features and easy navigation functions introduced in the Suunto Traverse product line last fall. “The all black watches, such as Suunto Core All Black, are legendary Suunto designs and we wanted to continue this fine tradition in the Suunto Traverse family by introducing the Traverse Sapphire Black. For this special version, we wanted to add also sapphire crystal glass, which amounts to its robustness, creating a bold, stealth-like look for the watch”, explains Suunto Industrial Designer, Tuomas Reivo. Versatile outdoor features and GPS/GLONASS navigation Suunto Traverse watches are easy to use with a quick access to key features. The watches support both GPS and GLONASS satellite navigation systems. Follow your progress en-route with key statistics such as altitude and distance, and save points of interest along the way. The automatic breadcrumb trail ensures you can re-trace your steps when needed. Altitude, vertical speed and total ascent are measured accurately with FusedAlti™, where barometric pressure information is combined with satellite altitude. Alerts, such as storm alarm, are made noticeable by vibration, keeping noise disturbance to a minimum. To find your essentials or check a map in the dark, the backlight of Suunto Traverse can be activated in an extra bright flashlight mode. All Suunto Traverse watches are tested according to military standard (MIL-STD- 810G) and are designed and hand built in Finland. Suunto Traverse Sapphire Black is available from May 19th in the Suunto.com webshop and with select retailers, the RRP is 499 €. For more information, visit traverse collection.

Suunto Launches Nautic & Nautic S: A Bold New Era in Suunto’s Dive Computing

Suunto Launches Nautic & Nautic S: A Bold New Era in Suunto’s Dive Computing

Suunto, the Finnish pioneer in precision instruments and dive technology, proudly unveils its new dive computer series: Suunto Nautic and Suunto Nautic S. These next-generation devices mark a leap forward in Suunto’s dive legacy, blending rugged reliability with modern innovation to meet the needs of divers at every level. Suunto announces the launch of two new dive computers, Suunto Nautic and Suunto Nautic S. These products mark the beginning of a new dive series designed to meet the evolving needs of both recreational and technical divers. With this launch, Suunto continues to build on its legacy of underwater exploration, offering reliable tools that combine modern functionality with durable design. Both products are designed and made in Finland. From the Latin nauticus, meaning “of ships and sailors,” the name Nautic pays homage to Suunto’s origins in navigation. Just as Suunto’s first precision compasses 90 years ago guided explorers across unknown terrain, the Nautic series is built to guide divers below the surface – where trust, accuracy, and awareness matter most.“The Nautic series builds on this legacy, combining Suunto’s proven reliability with modern features designed for today’s diving adventures. It represents the next chapter in Suunto’s long story of exploration beneath and beyond the surface,” says Lena Bergendahl, Suunto’s head of dive category and products. Suunto Nautic – a full featured next generation dive computer built for adventure The Suunto Nautic is a full-featured dive computer designed for dedicated divers who demand clarity, durability, and versatility. The Nautic features a 3.26-inch AMOLED display, the largest of its kind on the market. Designed for maximum readability in all diving conditions, the display offers a sharp 720x382 resolution and an adaptive user interface that ensures critical diving data is clearly visible. Despite its size and brightness, the Nautic maintains excellent battery performance: offering up to 120 hours of non-stop diving in medium brightness, 90 hours in night conditions, or 80 hours at full brightness. With typical use – about one dive per week – the battery lasts up to nine months on a single charge. In addition to core dive features such as single- and multi-gas support, customizable alarms, compass, and wireless tank pressure compatibility, Nautic includes advanced features for technical diving. These include customization of dive views, trimix support, GF99 and SurfGF indicators, decompression planning tools, and compatibility with closed-circuit rebreathers via an upcoming software update. The device also supports sidemount diving with dual tank pressure display and switch alerts. Suunto is renowned for its heritage and expertise in pioneering outdoor technology. The Nautic is also equipped with outdoor tools that support dive planning and preparation, including GPS, maps, tide information, weather forecasts, and sunrise/sunset times, and the Bühlmann 16 dive algorithm, complemented by a range of various algorithm settings. A built-in LED flashlight adds utility for low-light conditions, and the device is compatible with Suunto’s heart rate belt and tank pod. Users can choose between a versatile bungee strap or a comfortable textile strap, both designed to ensure the right fit for every dive: easy to adjust (even with thick gloves), quick to use, and comfortable for every dive condition. Suunto Nautic S – compact format with full dive functionality The Suunto Nautic S, designed for scuba and free divers, offers similar functionality in a more compact wrist-sized format. It features AMOLED display technology and an intuitive interface in a more compact, lightweight design for divers who prefer a smaller device. Compared to the Suunto Ocean all-around sports, outdoor, and dive watch, the Nautic S is a single-purpose dive computer that focuses entirely on underwater functionality, omitting smartwatch and sports features, such as optical heart-rate tracking. Like its larger counterpart, the Nautic S includes core diving features for both recreational and technical diving, including wireless tank pressure support, audio and vibration alarms, dive planning, compass, and sidemount support. It is ideal for freediving, snorkeling, and mermaiding, with specific features designed for these sports. The Nautic S also features the Bühlmann 16 dive algorithm with a range of various algorithm settings. The Nautic S is water-resistant to 100 meters and rated for dives up to 80 meters. It also has an extensive battery life, up to 60 hours of non-stop diving. The device introduces a graphite gray color and an elastic textile strap for improved comfort. It also supports in-device customization of dive views and is compatible with Suunto’s existing accessories, including the Tank POD, heart rate belt, and 22mm Ocean and outdoor straps. Suunto App: extending the dive experience The Suunto app plays a central role in extending the functionality of both Nautic and Nautic S. It offers divers new ways to plan, log, and revisit their underwater experiences. Users can view their dive route and distance and enrich their logs by adding personal details such as equipment used, visibility conditions, sightings, and share their experience with their dive buddies. The app keeps all dive records organized and easily shareable, helping divers get more value from each adventure and maintain a comprehensive digital logbook.  Continuing a legacy of exploration Founded in 1936 by Finnish inventor Tuomas Vohlonen, Suunto began with a breakthrough in compass technology – a more stable and accurate field compass that set a new standard for navigational precision. That same spirit of innovation has guided Suunto ever since. Suunto entered the world of diving in 1965 with the launch of the SK-4, its first diving compass. In the decades that followed, Suunto introduced some of the industry’s most pioneering dive instruments, including the SME dive computer in 1987 and the Suunto Spyder in 1997 – the world’s first watch-sized dive computer. These milestones helped shape modern diving and established Suunto as a trusted companion for divers across the globe.

Movesense grows independent from Suunto

Movesense grows independent from Suunto

Vantaa, September 30, 2021. Movesense, the open development platform for wearables and sensor products for fitness and health, is becoming independent of Suunto following a management buy-out deal. The deal opens new opportunities for Movesense to strengthen its business and seek growth especially in the medical field. At the same time the operational and other collaborative links with Suunto will remain deep. Through the Movesense platform, Suunto has made its own expertise available to other companies, enabling its technology to be used in applications that are not part of Suunto’s core business. Suunto is sharpening its focus on outdoor sports watches, dive computers, and mechanical instruments for outdoor enthusiasts. At the same time, Movesense targets its sensor platform to diverse business-to-business clientele for developing their own wearable solutions in sports and wellness and, most recently, in the medtech market with its recently introduced Movesense Medical sensor.  The buyer of Movesense is a company owned by current General Manager of Movesense, Mr. Jussi Kaasinen, who together with the Movesense team will continue to build the business further and serve existing and new customers. The parties have agreed not to disclose the transaction price. The deal effective of Oct 1st, 2021, will transfer Movesense’s team and business to the new company led by Jussi Kaasinen. He is a seasoned startup entrepreneur as he was the former CEO of Sports Tracker acquired by Suunto/Amer Sports in 2015. Suunto supports the transition to the full extent. The contracts with existing business-to-business customers and technology partners are transferred to the new company. Movesense and Suunto will continue deep co-operation in operational processes such as supply chain, manufacturing, and logistics. “This truly exciting change opens us new opportunities to operate and expand in the medical space with the Movesense Medical sensor, while at the same time allowing continuing driving the growth with our current and future Movesense sports products. We continue to provide our customers unprecedented Finnish-made cutting edge sensor technology, which enables new use cases varying from measuring physiological signals from individual athletes to team sports and all the way to health metrics and clinical grade ECG monitoring.”, comments Jussi Kaasinen. “Movesense becoming independent is a natural step following incubation and years of growing its business under Suunto umbrella. Suunto’s focus is on Outdoor and Adventure. As an independent company Movesense can focus on a more diverse range of opportunities. I’m proud of what the Movesense team has achieved to date and wish the team best of luck in growing the business further.”, says Heikki Norta, CEO and Brand President of Suunto. Movesense sensor is a coin-sized programmable movement, ECG and heart rate sensor for fast and cost-effective creation of wearable sensor solutions. Movesense is used for applications in health, wellbeing, sports, research, and more. For more information, please contact: www.movesense.com info@movesense.com

Some reminders are preemptive based on, for example, your activity history to make sure you are fully charged for the next outing. If the watch notices you are running low on battery during an exercise, it will automatically suggest changing to a different battery mode. Tested to the extreme with thousands of hours of real use in the toughest conditions by Suunto’s internal testing team and athletes all over the world, it is your trusted companion to confidently see you through any adventure.“Durability and precision, attributes at the core of Suunto design heritage, are highly valued by our athletes, and one of the elementary reasons they trust and choose us,” comments Markus Kemetter, Suunto Product Line Manager. “To ensure this, we put the Suunto 9 through vigorous testing. First in our testing laboratory, exposing the materials and the build to various elements and forces, including drop, freeze/thaw, humidity and immersion, and later by our skilled and passionate team of field testers and athletes, who for months have used the watch in their training and everyday life.”“When talking about training or racing tools for any adventure or endurance sport, the first thing I consider is durability, because it actually gives you the chance to just focus on what you need to do”, comments Mauricio Méndez Cruz, Suunto triathlete and Xterra World Champion. “For me, GPS track accuracy during training and racing has become, not a tool, but a weapon of choice and by this I mean that with it I have become a lot more precise, efficient and confident on my moves during racing – which, at the end of the day, is what makes me be at the top of the podium”, he concludes.Suunto FusedTrack™ for more accurate track and distanceOn long ultra runs, battery life is often the limiting factor for recording distance and track accurately, as GPS is a heavy drain on the battery. Control your core body temperature and get better performance results

Control your core body temperature and get better performance results

Your core body temperature can massively impact your performance. That’s why athletes pour water over themselves during races. They’re trying to cool down because they know once their core body temperature reaches a certain level, they’ll lose power and their performance will deteriorate. Like heart rate and power, core body temperature is a crucial metric for elite and recreational athletes alike. A new partnership with Suunto and CORE gives the Suunto community the opportunity to gain heat awareness and improve performance. The Suunto 9 Peak Pro, the most powerful watch we’ve ever made, combined with the CORE sensor mean the three key metrics of training and performance - heart rate, power, core body temperature - are all displayed on your watch face. Read on to learn more and for three ways to control your core body temperature. Overcoming the data and knowledge gap Performance manager at CORE and road cyclist Christopher Jones believes a general awareness and understanding of core body temperature and how it affects performance is limited. Until recently, athletes could only use invasive technology - e-pills and rectal probes - to monitor core temperature, and only for short time windows. Whereas heart rate monitors have provided almost around the clock data for decades. As a result the general public don't know a lot about core body temperature and how increased temperatures impact performance. But the CORE sensor changes that. “The big advantage an athlete gets from CORE is understanding their body and being able to perform better in the heat,” Christopher says. “It is an easy-to-use and affordable solution that opens up this data and heat awareness for everyone.” Embrace the tech and train smart Christopher is excited CORE has now partnered with Suunto. The body temperature sensor has been used by athletes, coaches and sports scientists for several years. Just as heart rate monitors eventually began enjoying popularity with recreational sports enthusiasts, the same thing is gradually happening with core body temperature. “It’s a new technology,” he says. “So just like a heart rate monitor, or a power meter, it will take time for people to adapt. But if you’re not racing in the Tour De France, you still use a heart rate monitor, right? Same thing with CORE. The tech will help guide sports people so they can train and race at their best. In a hot weather environment where it’s even harder to stay cool, the real time core body temperature data helps people to take the right steps to avoid heat becoming a problem.” How does core body temperature affect performance? When you get hot, your power output drops. Thermoregulation is, however, individual. Some people are better at operating at higher temperatures than others. When athletes get hot, the body diverts blood away from power-producing muscles to the skin. Sweat evaporation then cools the blood and the core body temperature. 3 ways to keep your core body temperature down The CORE sensor delivers live data directly to your Suunto watch and means you are informed and can take action before it is too late. There are a few specific approaches to help manage your core body temperature for performance. Follow a heat strategy This involves doing things like easing off before you know you will begin a long ascent so you can cool your body down in advance. Or another example is staying behind other riders to reduce the amount of power needed and to keep your core body temperature as low as possible until you see a better opportunity to push. Do active cooling Staying well hydrated, pouring cold water over yourself, and wearing highly breathable fabrics and gear are all tactics that can be combined to keep cool. Train your body to perform better when it’s hot Heat training involves conditioning your body to be more efficient and perform better when you’re hot. CORE helps you elevate your core temperature to a precise temperature zone, letting your body adapt without wearing yourself out. “Some athletes do heat training as a two-week training block, and then after that they can keep the conditioning with maintenance sessions.,” Christopher from CORE says. “Another approach is to slowly integrate heat training sessions into regular training sessions.” How to use CORE body temperature sensor with your Suunto SuuntoPlus CORE sports app is compatible with all Suunto 9 and Suunto 5 watches. To get started with CORE temperature sensor go to SuuntoPlus Store in Suunto app, find SuuntoPlus Core and select "Add to watch". Before starting your activity, go down to exercise options and select CORE sports app. This connects your watch with the CORE sensor. During your workout, your watch will receive and display live data from CORE sensor. Your body temperature data during the activity will also be saved in your workout. Note: Make sure your Suunto 9 or Suunto 5 watch is updated to the latest software.   Learn more about CORE body temperature

New SuuntoPlus advances make it easy to integrate sport tech innovations with Suunto watches

New SuuntoPlus advances make it easy to integrate sport tech innovations with Suunto watches

With the new SuuntoPlus™ Store and SuuntoPlus Editor sports tech innovators can quickly and easily ensure their products work with Suunto watches and find a sports-tech hungry audience.  Our aim at Suunto is to help outdoor athletes reach their goals. We do this by engineering cutting-edge GPS sports watches and by building a vast ecosystem of complimentary sports and outdoor tools and services. “As a triathlete myself, I’m always looking for a competitive edge and technology often provides one. Suunto watches are one side of the equation. The other are the incredible sports tech breakthroughs like sensors and augmented reality. We want to make it simple and easy for the Suunto community to find these sports tech breakthroughs so they can reap the benefits. And we want to help companies developing this kind of technology to work with our products and reach our audience,” says Janne Kallio, Ecosystem Lead for Suunto. Introducing new SuuntoPlus™ advances On October 25 Suunto launched the SuuntoPlus Store, new SuuntoPlus sport apps, including apps with third-party device compatibility, and SuuntoPlus Editor. The SuuntoPlus Store in Suunto app makes it easy to find a growing selection of new SuuntoPlus sport apps and our SuuntoPlus guides. SuuntoPlus Store publishes sports and health apps created by us and partner companies. The SuuntoPlus sport apps are designed for use during exercise. These apps include, for example, fitness testers, tools for tracking hydration, insights about an ascent, safety information, or informing users how much fat or carbs they are burning. New SuuntoPlus™ Editor for Suunto partners At Suunto, we want to make it easy for innovative, ground-breaking partners to reach a bigger audience, gain a following and work with us. That’s why we have created a new developer toolset for SuuntoPlus sport apps and devices: SuuntoPlus Editor. It’s available for companies who would like to build their own SuuntoPlus sport apps or make their device compatible with Suunto watches. SuuntoPlus Editor is available for the Suunto Partner program members. To become a member, apply via welcome partners. Connect with third-party devices SuuntoPlus sport apps in Suunto watches can now be connected to third-party devices. New sensor technologies are being developed more quickly than ever before, and startups are creating new tools for sports applications that haven’t until now existed. Together, we can create unique experiences for our sports and outdoor community. Device compatibilities can be found in SuuntoPlus Store. The first available devices are Activelook smart glass technology used by brands such as Engo, Cosmo and Julbo. The state-of-the-art CORE body temperature sensor is also available. The new Suunto 9 Peak Pro is compatible with these devices as will be the Suunto 5 / 9 family products later this year. Making it simple for our partners “Suunto ecosystem has been a key building block for Suunto over the last few years and we have expanded to include various sports and outdoor apps at a gradual, but relatively fast pace. The possibility for sports tech innovators to quickly and smoothly work with Suunto watches was a missing link. The sport apps and related SuuntoPlus Editor tools are the answer and the next big step for our expanding ecosystem. This points to an exciting future,” says Janne Kallio, Ecosystem Lead for Suunto.  Activelook smart glasses“The combination of Activelook smart sport glasses and Suunto watches is a great example of what the latest sports technology can do for athletes. Now trail runners can fly down the mountain and see their heart rate or the next turn without having to look at their wrists. Cyclists can follow their real-time power while keeping their eyes on the rider ahead of them. Having access to all the watch data in real-time, right in front of them, will revolutionize the way athletes engage with their sports activity. Getting the Suunto watch compatibility in place and working with Suunto has been great experience and we are excited to see what we can do together in the future,” says Xavier Bonjour, Marketing & Partnerships Director for Microoled.  CORE body temperature sensor“The CORE sensor has been adopted by many leading athletes including several UCI WorldTeams in cycling and Olympic medalists and world champions in triathlon. When athletes get hot, their performance starts to drop.  Accurate measurements of core body temperature help athletes to improve their training and racing. Being one of the first to implement directly into the Suunto sports app is an important milestone. It was a straight-forward approach and only took a few days. Now Suunto athletes can benefit from easy access to their CORE data and use it to optimize their performance,” says Chris Blomfield-Brown, Performance Manager for CORE. Suunto’s growing ecosystem of sport apps breaks the 300 mark The Suunto ecosystem has reached an impressive milestone: we now have more than 300 digital apps and services our users can choose from to help them towards their sports goals and during their adventures. It’s easy for them to find their preferred coaching tool, their next trail running route from one of many leading outdoor services or to share their workouts in their local sports community. Every hour, thousands of workouts flow through a constellation of innovative, data-rich sport services and planned workouts and routes flow into Suunto watches. Getting expert training plans and discovering popular routes for the next run or ride has never been so simple. “Komoot and Suunto enjoy a seamless partnership. Our shared community of sports enthusiasts can access a vast array of world class routes for a variety of outdoor sports and get turn-by-turn navigation directly on their wrist, making adventure safer and accessible to all,” says Ben Thompson, Director of Business Development, Komoot. Powered by people, inspired by the trail: Introducing Suunto x PWRUP

Powered by people, inspired by the trail: Introducing Suunto x PWRUP

Suunto teams up with Paris-based sports crew PWRUP for a bold new watch strap collaboration inspired by trail running, island adventures, and the power of community. Born in Paris in 2019, PWRUP (short for Power Up) is more than a sports crew – it’s a movement. A vibrant collective of runners, cyclists, climbers, and explorers, PWRUP has trail running at its heart but thrives in all forms of motion. They’re known for blending lifestyle with performance, constantly pushing limits while building community through shared energy and unforgettable adventures. Describing themselves as a family, PWRUP is as much about people as it is about sport. Whether they’re navigating the streets of Paris or volcanic trails on remote islands, they’re always seeking connection. “I started running in 2015 to stay in shape and quickly fell in love with the sport, discovering its deep impact on my creativity and mental clarity,” says Ruddy Trobrillants, one of the crew’s core members. “Whether navigating the streets of the city or the volcanoes of nearby islands, I’m always chasing connection, balance, and the next big adventure.” That spirit – of movement, discovery, and energy – is now woven into a new collab between Suunto and PWRUP. “The first time I ran with a Suunto watch was during Transvulcania, an intense Ultra marathon in La Palma, in 2022. This is definitely my favorite race, and it allowed me to discover this amazing island,” Ruddy says. “So, when I had the chance to work on a strap design with Suunto, I directly knew that I was going to mix PWRUP DNA and to pay homage to the Isla Bonita.” The SUUNTO x PWRUP watch strap reflects the volcanic earth and rugged rock formations leading up to El Roque de los Muchachos at 2,400 meters above sea level. Embedded with subtle particles to mirror the rocky trail and designed with layered PWRUP logos to symbolize the energy within you, the strap is more than gear – it’s a story. A reminder that the power is already inside you.   Photography by PWRUP – WORN WILD

Coast to Coast: an iconic adventure race

Coast to Coast: an iconic adventure race

Speight’s Coast to Coast is an iconic multisport race across New Zealand's South Island. Every year, more than 800 competitors line up to run, cycle and paddle the 243km width of the island. No one knows more about the event than 5-time winner and current race director, Richard Ussher. He explains its enduring appeal. Why is the race so iconic? What really sets it apart is the concept of crossing a country in a day (or two). New Zealand’s South Island is the perfect distance – long enough to be a real challenge, yet short enough to be achievable by more than just the truly insane. Is it more adventure-race or triathlon?I’d say it falls between the two. Top competitors certainly treat it more like a triathlon, where further down the field you probably get more into the adventure-racing realm. Richard also created a Suunto Movie of the Coast to Coast Mountain Run course with his Suunto Ambit3, which you can see here. Post by Richard Ussher. Which discipline decides who wins? You really have to be an all-rounder to win. The two sections that tend to decide the race are the Mountain Run and the Kayak. But then there’s still 70km of cycling to finish it off – normally into a stiff headwind. Did you record the Running Stage time yourself?Yes. It’s probably close to what the bulk of the better two-day runners will set. The top one-day and team competitors are closer to the 3-hour mark though. Last year’s winner Braden Currie clocked 2:49 for the run. How did you become race director? The event was sold to a company called Trojan Holdings in 2013. They contacted many former participants and asked them where they thought the race needed to go. I was a little vocal in my opinions, and after talking with them, ended up in the role. It certainly wasn’t something I thought about before, but it’s a great opportunity. So you’re retired? No, I’m not retired. I had a very tough 2014 because of injury, but I can finally see light at the end of that tunnel. My focus is obviously on the management side of Coast to Coast now, but I still love getting out and competing. Nowadays, I’m more focused on competing in races that I’ve always wanted to do. How do you like the Suunto Movie Tell us about Suunto Movie on the Ambit?I really like this feature, especially where you get to see the whole course in the revolving view. I can see it being really useful for multisport athletes, as it gives you an idea of what the course might be like, and to a certain degree helps create a picture of the gradients involved. Have you used Suunto products before?Yes, I’ve been using Suunto products from early on in my adventure-racing career – starting with the Suunto Advizor, which I still have. I also use the global compass range and orienteering compasses as well as Suunto’s Ambit and Core watches. Suunto products have always been fantastic. Introducing Alex Kydd

Introducing Alex Kydd

Suunto Dive are super excited to announce Alex Kydd is joining the Suunto Ambassador family. Photographer, marine biologist and diver originally from Melbourne, Australia, Alex now proclaims to being “based on” Ningaloo Reef Western Australia honoring the number of hours that he spends exploring underwater capturing his breath-taking images. A rare shot of Alex Kydd in front of the camera taken photographer Alfred Minnaarr. © Alex trains like an athlete in his discipline. Practising every day, editing all the time and descending beneath the surface has led him to achieve artistry in his images. Alex's photos stand out above the rest with his dedication and passion aiding his continued development as a photographer enabling him to produce his unique shots. “The ocean is my happy place. Every time you enter the water you never know what you might see and it's such a misunderstood ecosystem. Everything is connected and the more time you spend in it, the more you appreciate.” Alex Kydd by photographer Alfred Minnaarr © Beginning his diving journey with snorkelling at 16 in the cool waters off Melbourne where he grew up, he later began scuba diving on a trip to Thailand in 2009 where he firmly solidified his love and respect for the ocean. Exploring his passion further Alex studied Marine Biology at university and four years ago he started his journey into the world of underwater photography and has had not had a chance to look back. “At age 16 I first started taking photos. I had a very basic 2m waterproof camera for snorkelling in Melbourne. I progressed slowly to more upgraded cameras over the next few years. Eventually I had enough savings and I got myself a DSLR and housing. I was going out taking 500-1000 photos per day and editing them every night. This I believe, fast tracked me to learn. The best advice I can give for underwater photography is to find a mentor or like-minded people to learn from.” Alex’s next stops on his extensive adventuring are Raja Ampat, West Papua, French Polynesia and Fiji where he will be exploring with his new dive computers including the Suunto EON Core, Suunto D5 and Suunto Tank POD. Alex’s favourite device at the moment is the Suunto D5. He also represents Fourth Element and Ocean Positive as a team diver. Alex Kydd: Instagram

Tribute to Dr Bruce Wienke

Tribute to Dr Bruce Wienke

It is with great sadness that we announce the news that our beloved Dr Bruce Wienke, a true pioneer in his field of dive specific algorithm design, has passed away leaving behind a great legacy. A keen diver, and downhill skier, Dr Wienke’s interest in diving was reflected in his achievements, and great success as seen in his accolades. His astonishing CV included Instructor Trainer and Technical Instructor with NAUI, a Master Instructor with PADI, Institute Director for YMCA, and an Instructor Trainer/Technical Instructor for SDI/TDI. “Most of the diving I have done has always been interesting and exciting. To my Australian friends, diving the Great Barrier Reef was incredible. Another favourite place is diving underneath the Arctic ice. It is just amazing; the water is cold of course, but it is just amazing. It is so clear, and perhaps because of the overhead ice and the associated underwater activity it’s like diving in a three dimensional surrealistic world. It is fantastic, and contrary to what you might think there is a variety of life down there. Very cool.” Dr Bruce Wienke. Dr Wienke joined Suunto in the late 90’s, where he hit the ground running and didn’t stop. The collaboration arose after some of his diving work published on core screen modelling in the open literature and was noticed by Ari Nikkola who was at the time presiding over the inhouse the algorithm development at Suunto. Employing his great expertise in the diving specific algorithm field, he joined Ari Nikkola in the development of the revolutionary Reduced Gradient Bubble Model (RGBM). The RGBM, a name first coined by Dr Wienke, is a dual phase approach to staging diver ascents over an extended range of diving applications (altitude, nonstop, decompression, multiday, repetitive, multilevel, mixed gas, and saturation) and a giant stride forward from previous modified Haldanean decompression models. Prior to joining the Suunto family, Dr Wienke was a Program Manager in the Nuclear Weapons Technology Simulation and Computing Office at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) where he completed research up until his death. As head of the LANL Nuclear Counter Measures Dive Team involving Special Warfare Units both above and below the water, he trained alongside the special forces well into his 70s. His interests were in computational decompression models, gas transport, and phase mechanics. He was the author of five monographs on his field, as well as more than 200 technical journal articles and was an active contributor to underwater symposia, educational publications, technical periodicals and decompression workshops. Alongside his high achieving work life, he served actively as a consultant for decompression algorithms within the dive industry and he worked with Divers Alert Network, DAN, on applications of high performance computing and communications for diving. Wienke’s first Suunto dive computer releases were the Vyper and Cobra in 1999, which is still accompanying divers all over the world on their underwater adventures, shortly followed by the iconic, best-selling Suunto Stinger dive computer. With his continued support, Suunto together with Dr Wienke, using his own source code, created the Technical RGBM. Now including helium gas, and rated to a depth of 120m, the Suunto HelO2 and D9tx opened the door to the technical dive market. A major new release in 2012 from Dr Wienke saw the Suunto Fused RGBM which combined the Full RGBM and the Technical model. Greatly benefiting both the recreational and technical diver, the algorithm now supported rebreathers, and new depths were conquered with a 150m rating. The Suunto Fused™ RGBM 2 can be found in the latest releases, the Suunto Eon Series and the D5. The algorithm manages dissolved gas and free-gas in both the tissues and blood of a diver making it significantly smarter than any previous models. Dr Wienke described this algorithm as a supermodel. Dr Bruce Wienke was a widely regarded and respected figure of the dive industry, and he will be by missed all his Suunto family. He died on Saturday 15th February 2020, and is survived by his wife, Annie.

Tested by Real World Divers

Tested by Real World Divers

Well known now for his higher-level training of professional and technical divers, along with a wealth of experience Johan began life in Netherlands and completed his first dive in Tunisia with CMAS in 1996. Immediately impressed he purchased all his own equipment and rose to instructor level in a short time. He concentrated on specialising so he could broaden his knowledge which is where Johan developed his passion. After divng on the wrecks in the North Sea he found his calling and continued training in wreck diving and Trimix so he could explore deeper sites that hadn’t had their treasures pillaged like the wrecks at shallower depths. “At greater depths I found the wrecks were more intact. I am talking about wrecks 80 meters and these wrecks are less exposed and also in better condition because they are not so exposed as those at shallower depths.” Johan de With selfie. To help him explore even more depth, his dive training led him onto rebreathers. He realised the limitation of many of his open circuit dives was the number of cylinders he could carry it seemed only natural for him to transition from open circuit. “In 2015, together with Markku Diedrich, I dived a world record mixed team in Lake Thun, Switzerland (fresh, cold water) I was on OC and Markku on CCR where we travelled to a depth of 166.5m.” Recording of the team’s deepest dive in a book of records. Johan’s deep accolades do not end there. “On the rebreather I dived into caves to a depth of 14m. On open system in the caves up to 103m. On the rebreather in open water up to 183m. Open water on open system 166.4m.” Johan now works as commercial diver and an instructor at the only private institute of commercial professional diving in the Netherlands. He also teaches deep technical diving and has his own gas filling station, Techduikschool Nederlands. An important part of his diving is communicating information to the dedicated team of Dive Engineers at Suunto HQ as he puts computers to the test in the field and ensures they meet strict performance targets. The infomation Johan feeds back allows the engineers to improve and fine tune devices allowing for the best user experience and in turn lets divers focus on the action and rely on their robust companions in the toughest conditions. In action training professional divers in the Netherlands. “I dive and test a lot for Suunto and share as much information as possible and give feedback about these computers both positively and negatively. I currently dive with the EON Steel and the EON Core and with the also since its release, the Suunto D5. I use this during all my dives both OC in open water and caves and CCR in open water and in caves. As a backup I have my bottom timers with wet-note, and a spare computer in my pocket. Everywhere and always, even with commercial diving I take the Suunto D5 into the water. I do this so that I also have a digital log of all my commercial dives.” Suunto Dive computers stand the test of these extreme adventures alongside Johan. Johan is not just an Ambassador for Suunto Dive, he represents brands including Ursuit and Bare drysuits, Tecline, Ammonite for lighting and Paralenz to capture the action on camera also with great satisfaction and pride. "Regardless of environment depth or length of the dive or type of dive OC or CCR, technical diving must be feasible for everyone regardless of their financial status. These are brands that certainly think of the customer with price quality. I notice these companies listen and do a lot with the feedback given by us as Brand Ambassadors and testers of these materials.” Jyri Vehmaskoski, Suunto EON Steel product team: "You don't dive if you don't trust your equipment. Everything we build is tested by real-world divers like us. Our gear is functional, accurate, and built to take a beating – and has hundreds of test dives to prove it."
